What do termites normally look like

June 10th, 2010

One of the most economically destructive organisms is the termite. Worldwide, termites cause billions of dollars of damage on an annual basis. The damage inflicted on buildings is due to termite’s voracious appetite for wood. It is their diet, and normally in a forest, termites have a very important role as the prime decomposers of wood. But in urban areas, some species of termites have adapted to the manmade environments and thus, anything made of wood is at risk.

Most people have no idea how termites look like, except that they are white. Which is correct, but not always. Some species of termites are even black in colour, but normally, the destructive species of termites are the pale, white coloured variety, which are subterranean in habit. The white colored termites are the ones that people have in mind when they talk about “white ants.”

So how do you spot a termite if you come across them? Here’s more on what do termites look like.

Why Lasik is the only option for myopia

April 24th, 2010

Myopia is a curse for millions, probably billions of people worldwide. Myopia is the inability to see an object clearly, at a distance; only objects nearby appears clear. The standard treatment is to wear glasses, but this does not heal myopia at all. Quite the contrary, wearing glasses only make myopia progressively worse.

There are only two ways to treat myopia - Lasik surgery, or practicing a program of eye exercises, calming meditation and careful diet. The latter is very difficult to follow, and requires a lot of discipline. Even so, it may take months before any kind of noticeable improvement take place. Also, you would need to be able to rest a lot in the house, because going to work with your glasses on, just negates whatever improvements you experience with your eye exercises.

That leaves us with Lasik eye surgery. Lasik may be costly, and somewhat risky, but nothing beats the speed of improvement, which is the best thing about it. You literally regain your vision in half an hour; so imagine rolling back decades of myopia with Lasik!

While you do need to rest after the surgery and not strain your eyes, the change can be so dramatic that it can floor you. A couple of weeks after surgery, and you can then do all the things you always wanted to do but couldn’t with your glasses on. How cool is that? Check out more Lasik facts here.

Sail a Yacht at Least Once in Your Life

October 30th, 2009

No matter what the yatch charter ultimate peculiarities, every boat begins as rolls of mat fiberglass and tubs of hot, red resin. “Laying up the hull” is the job of bearded Arnie Clow. Arnie, muscles bulging under his sleeveless yellow T-shirt, moves back and forth between the two halves of the mold split like the belly of a whale, spreading sheets of fiberglass and swabbing on resin. Five double layers will be laid at the boats edge; the keel will be about 1 1/4, inches thick at completion.

After the necessary three to four weeks of curing, sanding, and buffing, the Sail Yachts are peeled from its red mold and moved “onto the line.” From here, until its final delivery date some six to 12 months later, the boat will remain in a state similar to dry docking and receive the rest of its fittings. Some six to eight boats may be on the line at any one time with up to 90 employees scrambling up and down their sides hammering down floors, screwing on winches, bolting down 10,000-pound keels, and raising the 62-foot masts.

After the rudder mounts, copper bonding (to protect against lightning), fuel and water tanks are screwed into the hull, a one-piece combination deck, deckhouse and cockpit is fastened onto the hull. From here, the different shops — machine, electrical, carpenter, sewing — supply their handmade components according to the customer’s specifications, which are mimeographed and taped to the hull of each boat.

Nothing is left to chance. Operations manager Rusty Bradford, a pencil shoved behind his ear, intones, “It’s not unusual to tear something out if it’s not right the first time.” Even the diesel engines, one of the few parts that Hinckley does not make, are tested on the company’s own dynamometer.

One observer described the Hinckley process this way: “First they build a fiberglass boat and then build a wooden one inside it.” On a completed Hinckley, no exposed fiberglass offends the eye below decks. All walls are paneled in varnishe mahogany or ash and the floor is polished teak with inlaid holly. All fittings are either brass, bronze, or stainless steel.

On this breezy Monday, “Dalliance,” a newly launched gold and navy Hinckley 64, rode majestically in the harbor. Estimated cost? “In the neighborhood” of $1 million.

Above decks she is an impressive sight of neatly furled sails, gleaming steel, spotless white fiberglass, and burnished teak. But below decks, the Dalliance comes into her own.

Energy efficient vinyl replacement windows

October 21st, 2009

Many older homes are still equipped with single pane windows, because that was the norm for windows in the time period when they were built. Modern vinyl replacement windows come with dual panes which will not allow air to circulate between the inside and outside of your house the way single panes will. Therefore, they can make a massive difference in the energy efficiency in your home and the cost of your utility bills. Many vinyl windows come with a UV coating on the glass in order to block the harmful rays from the sun that fade your carpets and furniture.

Re-roofing Our House the Right Way

September 14th, 2009

I know that there were a lot of things that the home owners before us did wrong, but one of the worst ones was the roof. We had no idea how bad we would need to replace it before it got worse. We need to find the best roofing materials to make sure that it is done right this time. We need to make sure that it does not leak, and it does not weather the way the last roof did. I know it can be done if we get the best quality products. Now I just need to find the best deal.

Relaxing stuff

August 20th, 2009

My mother in law is moving in with us. We have an extra bedroom and bath that are right next to each other. I am hoping to make the two rooms into a suite for her comfort and privacy. Due to her age and limited mobility her doctor recommended that I get one of those walk in bath tubs. I thought I would die because all I could think of is those bath showers that you find in the hospital, but to my pleasant surprise they have improved the style quite greatly to include walk in Jacuzzi Bathtubs and whirlpools to look quite luxurious.

Credit Articles for an Improved Financial Image

August 4th, 2009

It is most important to keep an eye on your credit and debt consoladation reports when you are looking to buy a house. You want everything to be as perfect as possible. You might find mistakes that you have to clear up. Chances are good that there are many people in the US who have the same name as you do, and their credit marks could be accidentally showing up on your report. You should also check through to make sure you have not been a victim of identity theft.  Your credit reports can be fixed if you can prove the marks are not yours or are erroneous for any other reason. You can sign up for a service that might allow you to look at your credit reports any time you feel the need. This is great for those who are going to buy a home, or perhaps for those who have been a victim of identity theft. The sooner you see the mistakes and errors, the sooner you can clean them up and contact the authorities if needed. It’s amazing how something as simple as your credit report can pretty much determine how your life will go.
