Growing bonsai trees is not as hard as it sounds

Monday, February 25th, 2008

The ancient art of growing bonsai trees continues to gain steadily in new converts to this compact and miniature form of gardening. Bonsai originated from the Far East and was originally practiced by monks and royalty. Eventually, common people started adopting this form of container gardening, and its popularity spread.

Now, bonsai has spread its wings across the entire world, and has found favor among urbanites who find its low demands on space, and the fact that it is not really messy to grow, appealing. Also, the thought of growing real trees in a container and managing, even styling their appearance; this is a fanciful and highly specialized form of gardening!

Many people think that bonsai is tough. But, in reality, it is no harder than growing a plot of vegetables. Each individual tree has specific needs to tend to. But, when its needs are fulfilled, a bonsai tree can reward the owner by putting on the most elegant of shows.

Watering and feeding are important aspects of bonsai, which can improve with time and practice. And bonsai trees do not really have big needs, since their size is small to begin with. Once you have become proficient in watering and feeding, you can move on to the real delights of bonsai, namely, styling or training your bonsai to look the way you want it to. and it is then that you find growing bonsai trees is more art than gardening!

Calories in food

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Counting calories is a useful way to determine how many calories you are taking into your body, for a particular food. This helps you to plan in advance your daily meal intake so that you don’t end up taking too many calories that may adversely impact your weight.

Different foods all have varying amounts of calories in them. For example, a slice of banana has more calories than a slice of apple. A cup of coffee has more calories in it than say, a cup of tea. Depending on your body weight, you should adjust your calorie intake so that you don’t exceed your optimum intake for each day. This applies if you are overweight, and have a desire to lose weight. The better you can manage your calorie uptake, the better your weight level will be.

This site talks more about the calorie content of foods.

Can fasting boost HGH levels?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Fasting is a key component of many religious and holistic health practices down the ages. It has been used to maintain and improve health, and also to tune the mind to more esoteric purposes. Fasting also cleanses the body of toxins and impurities. But, what many are not aware of is, fasting exerts its benefits mainly through the increase of growth hormone (HGH) in the body during fasting.

The main reason why fasting is so highly beneficial is because during a fast, the level of HGH in the bloodstream starts going up and may spike at a high level. This is because the level of insulin drops during a fast, and HGH, being antagonistic to insulin, operates a whole lot better when insulin is not present.  It is no wonder, people who practice regular fasting in a healthy manner often look younger than their age, and are fitter, with sharper minds. Could this be attributed to their high HGH levels? Read more about fasting and HGH.

Radiant Floor Heating Rubber Piping - Is It Still Used?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Most hydronic radiant heating systems use polyethylene tubing, which is also referred to as PEX tubing. Either that or they will use radiant floor heating rubber piping. Some people use copper, but it is not as common. However, some people swear by copper tubing because they claim that it will not corrode from the recirculating water.

Perhaps the best option these days is to use cross-linked PEX tubing because of its ease of installation. If you are still concerned about the piping, talk to your installer before making any decisions.

Tandem Bike

Monday, February 25th, 2008

So I need to find more fun things to do with the bf, and we both need more exercise, so I thought a
tandem bike might be a way to kill two birds with one stone.
So I started poking around in the phone book looking for Burley Tandem Bicycles, and found a few options. Looks like it might be worth a whirl.
Of course considering how clumsy I am, the bf will have to drive. Otherwise you’d be reading about us in the news for sure.
