VIDEO: DUDUZANE ZUMA IS A FREE MAN... FOR NOW

Duduzani Zuma is no stranger to the court and faced judges once again on Monday morning after being charged with corruption. The charges are for acting “in common purpose” with Ajay Gupta’s alleged attempt to bribe former Deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, in October 2015 as part of the Gupta family’s plans to capture and control the National Treasury.

Zuma was released on R100 000 bail and, although he entered the court in leg irons, he was in a seemingly good mood. After granting Zuma's bail, prosecutors requested that the case be postponed to January 2019 so that all of the accused could be charged for their crime. Although Zuma's lawyers argued against such a long waiting period on the basis that the case was over two years old and should be ready for trial, Magistrate Jeremy Jansen van Vuuren granted the state’s request for postponement.

Gupta supposedly attempted to bribe Jonas with the position of finance minister at the family's Saxonwold compound. The charges that have been publicised read, "At this meeting, Mr Ajay Gupta in the presence of [Zuma] offered Mcebisi Jonas the position of finance minister, advising him that the current minister of finance was to be relieved of his position in Cabinet. Mr Ajay Gupta further offered an amount of R600 million to be deposited in a bank account of his choice and R600 000 in cash immediately to assist him and his companies in their business ventures with the government."

Advocate Dawie Joubert‚ for Zuma‚ argued that the state’s case against the 34-year-old was “very weak” and said he denied Jonas’s allegations but the prosecution also suggested that Zuma will be attending other hearings related to other unknown cases related to the investigations connected to his companies.

Zuma was granted bail on condition that he hands over all of his passports and check in at the Rosebank Police Station once a week. He must also get permission from the investigating officer if he wants to travel abroad. Zuma is also attending another hearing at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Thursday related to two charges of culpable homicide in connection with a 2014 car crash. This accident was the cause of Phumzile Dube's death, who was travelling home in a taxi in 2014, after Duduzane lost control of his Porsche in the rain on the M1 near the Grayston Road off-ramp. Another passenger, Jeanette Mashaba, died a few days after the crash but her death was initially ruled as one of natural causes.

Zuma is a free man as of Monday pending the next court case in January and the outcome of the culpable homicide charges.
