ETHAN HOOKER INJURY!
The Unpunished Cheap Shot: Why Ethan Hooker Deserved Better
Rugby is a game of collisions, and fans accept that injuries are simply part of the sport. However, there is a massive difference between a tough tackle in the heat of battle and a reckless, entirely avoidable incident that ends a player's season. The recent injury to Sharks and Springboks star Ethan Hooker during their clash with the Ospreys has left the rugby world fuming, and rightly so.
It should have been a moment of pure brilliance. Just before half-time, the 23-year-old Hooker burst through the defence on a spectacular 70-metre sprint.
This brings us to the most baffling part of the entire ordeal. Who in this professional era of rugby does this go unpunished? We are living in a time where player safety is supposedly the paramount concern for World Rugby. Matches are paused endlessly for the Television Match Official to scrutinise every minor infringement, accidental high tackle, and head contact in ultra-slow motion. Yet, in this instance, the officials reviewed the try multiple times and completely ignored the foul play staring them in the face.
It is a bitter pill to swallow, and it highlights a deeply frustrating inconsistency in how the sport is officiated. And let us be honest: had Ethan Hooker done this to somebody else, he would have been punished. If a physically imposing South African player had dived onto a smaller European back well after a try was scored, the whistles would have blown immediately. The outrage would have been swift, and a lengthy ban would undoubtedly have followed.
Sharks coach JP Pietersen rightly pointed out after the match that the rules are written specifically to protect players from this exact type of dangerous, post-try contact.
