MARKRAM MAGIC STUNS INDIA
Aiden Markram delivered a masterpiece in Raipur as South Africa pulled off one of their greatest ODI victories, chasing down a massive 359 to beat India and level the series.
In conditions that traditionally favour the home side, Markram’s century shifted the momentum and silenced a lively crowd expecting another dominant Indian win.
India had set an imposing 358 for 5, fuelled by two superb centuries, and looked firmly in control at the halfway stage. South Africa, however, refused to panic.
Markram walked in with intent, picking gaps early, rotating strike smartly and punishing anything remotely loose. His 110 off 98 balls, his first ODI ton in India, combined elegance with precise aggression.
Crucial support came from Temba Bavuma, who stabilised the innings as part of a 100-plus stand that took heat off the chase. Once India’s spinners struggled under evening dew, South Africa’s hitters pounced. Matthew Breetzke smashed a composed half-century, while Dewald Brevis showcased his fearless stroke-play, clearing the ropes at key moments.
Even after Markram fell, the chase never truly wobbled. Corbin Bosch played with maturity at the death, and Keshav Maharaj calmly finished the job with four balls remaining.
