BAFANA CRASH OUT OF AFCON
In a tense AFCON last‑16 showdown in Rabat on Sunday, South Africa’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations came to a crushing end as Cameroon edged Bafana Bafana 2–1, booking a quarter‑final date with hosts Morocco.
South Africa started the match full of intent and bright in the early stages, carving out several golden opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes only to spurn them.
Lyle Foster, Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng all threatened but couldn’t find the back of the net, a costly waste that Cameroon would soon punish.
The deadlock finally broke in the 34th minute when Junior Tchamadeu capitalised on a loose defensive clearance to fire the Indomitable Lions into the lead.
Just two minutes after the break, Christian Kofane doubled Cameroon’s advantage with a powerful header, leaving South Africa chasing the game.
Bafana never gave up, though. In the 88th minute, substitute Evidence Makgopa pulled one back after a clever cross from Aubrey Modiba, sparking hopes of a dramatic late comeback.
But despite a frantic finish and pressure on Cameroon’s defence, South Africa couldn’t find the equaliser that would’ve taken the tie to extra time.
The defeat means South Africa are out of the tournament, with their fans left rueing missed chances and what might’ve been.
Cameroon now face Morocco in the quarter‑finals.
