EMBROSE PAPIER TAKE A BOW!

Embrose Papier: The Unstoppable Scrum Half and South Africa's Embarrassment of Riches

If you have watched any of the Vodacom Bulls' recent fixtures in the United Rugby Championship, you will know exactly who is running the show in Pretoria. Embrose Papier is quite simply in the form of his life. After steering his team to crucial victories and producing a magnificent two try, Man of the Match performance against Munster this weekend. This man has to be in Springbok plans this season.

The answer points to a uniquely South African problem. The embarrassment of scrum half riches in our local game is getting completely ridiculous.

Something in the Municipal Water

Having watched generations of South African rugby players come through the ranks, I can confidently say that we are currently witnessing an unprecedented golden era for number nines. It genuinely feels like Springbok rugby has scrum half magic juice distributed in the municipal water!

When you look at the national depth chart, the sheer volume of world class talent is actually embarrassing for other nations to witness. Rassie Erasmus has a staggering list of established stars and rising prodigies at his disposal.

  • The Veterans: Faf de Klerk and Cobus Reinach are proven World Cup winners who understand the Springbok system perfectly.

  • The Sharks Duo: Grant Williams and Jaden Hendrikse offer blistering pace and elite tactical control.

  • The Rising Stars: Players like Morné van den Berg at the Lions are constantly pushing for higher honours with brilliant attacking play.

The Form of His Life

Despite this incredibly crowded national queue, Papier is making himself absolutely impossible to ignore. At 28 years old, he has matured into a complete halfback. He is no longer just the lightning fast kid who made his Springbok debut back in 2018.

His recent displays for the Bulls have been nothing short of breathtaking. Against Munster, his first try was a sensational 40 metre solo effort that left international defenders clutching at thin air. His service from the base of the ruck is crisp, his box kicking is highly accurate, and his attacking instincts are perfectly in sync with fly half Handré Pollard. He is the absolute heartbeat of a Bulls side that is currently hunting for URC silverware.

What More Does He Need to Do?

The spiky reality of professional rugby is that being the best player in your franchise does not automatically guarantee you a Test jersey. Papier was surprisingly omitted from the recent Springbok alignment camps, a snub that would have broken the spirit of a lesser player.

Instead of complaining, Papier has responded in the best possible way. He has simply laced up his boots and delivered consecutive masterclasses on the pitch. He is forcing the national selectors to watch him every single weekend. If he continues to dictate matches with this level of authority, that international recall will no longer be a debate. It will be an absolute necessity.
