GOOD NEWS FOR HURT CHILD!

A Living Miracle: Little Jana Steyn’s Incredible Recovery

When news broke about a freak accident involving a 17-month-old toddler from Potchefstroom, the local community held its collective breath. Little Jana Steyn was severely injured in late August 2025, suffering a critical head wound that required immediate and life-saving intervention. Today, her story is no longer one of sheer panic but of profound hope. The child was seriously hurt but looks to have completely turned the corner, and her journey highlights a reality we often forget.

A Race Against Time

The details of the accident are every parent's worst nightmare. In the immediate aftermath, it became clear that local facilities were not enough to handle the sheer severity of Jana's injuries. A specialised medical helicopter had to be dispatched, airlifting the toddler from Potchefstroom directly to an intensive care unit in Midrand.

Once she arrived, a team of specialists took over. Scans were urgently done, and she was rushed into theatre where surgeons meticulously repaired the damage to her skull and head. For her mother, Kelly Steyn, and their family, the waiting must have been agonising. Yet, the news that followed the surgery was overwhelmingly positive. Jana was responsive. She was fighting back.

South Africa's Medical Excellence

This harrowing ordeal brings an important truth to light. We have great medical care practitioners in South Africa. It is very easy to get bogged down in the daily complaints about our country, but when the chips are down and it is a matter of life and death, our emergency response teams and trauma surgeons are truly world-class.

From the paramedics who stabilised her on the ground to the helicopter flight crew who navigated her safely to Midrand, and finally the brilliant surgeons in the ICU, the level of care was phenomenal. Previously, the unthinkable may have occurred in a case this severe. Without access to such rapid air transport and highly skilled neurosurgical intervention, a child with such catastrophic head trauma would have faced a much darker outcome. Instead, the medical professionals gave this little girl a second chance at life.

A Community United

The medical teams did the heavy lifting in the operating theatre, but the Potchefstroom community provided the emotional anchor. Through BackaBuddy campaigns and the StroomCares initiative, people rallied together to raise funds and offer immense spiritual support. Complete strangers donated money to help ease the financial burden on the family, while thousands more kept the Steyn family in their prayers.

Jana Steyn is now widely described as a living miracle in her hometown. Her recovery is a testament to her own resilience, the unwavering love of her family, and the power of a united community.

Most importantly, her story stands as a shining example of the dedication and absolute brilliance of the medical professionals working in our country. We often look overseas for heroes, but the men and women walking the wards of our local hospitals are performing actual miracles every single day.
