She is still fighting for her life, entirely unaware that her family has just buried a loved one.
Today finally brought a grim sense of progress as authorities formally charged the suspect responsible for the shooting. While the charges are a necessary step towards justice, they offer little comfort to a family locked in a state of profound shock. Relatives are spending their days shuttling between a gravesite and an intensive care unit, caught in a living nightmare that began with a mundane drive.
We constantly hear the phrase 'road rage' tossed around as if it is a natural phenomenon or an inevitable byproduct of rush hour traffic. It is not. We need to stop softening the language surrounding these acts. Pulling a weapon over a perceived slight on the road is not a simple loss of temper. It is a conscious, lethal choice. The fact that a family has been utterly destroyed because someone could not handle a delayed lane change or a honked horn is completely absurd.
Attending the funeral made the reality of this epidemic painfully clear. Looking at the faces of friends, colleagues and neighbours, you could see a shared, terrifying realisation. It could have been any of us. We all share the roads, we all experience the frustration of traffic, and we all assume the person in the next lane is a rational human being. When that social contract is broken by sudden, violent gunfire, the ripple effect tears through an entire community. The massive turnout showed the immense love surrounding the victims, but it was also a collective display of disbelief from a neighbourhood trying to process the inexplicable.
As the shooter prepares to face the courts, the legal system will slowly run its course. However, for a grieving family and a mother still lying in a hospital bed, there is no verdict that can undo the damage of that split-second decision. If there is anything to take away from this unspeakable tragedy, it is a desperate plea for perspective. Absolutely no argument on the road is worth a human life, and no commute should end in a cemetery.
