The Highveld Rollercoaster: Why Joburg's Unpredictable Skies Are a Blessing in Disguise
Johannesburg has always held a quiet, smug pride in having some of the best weather on the planet. For decades, the Highveld climate delivered a glorious, predictable rhythm. We bragged about our endless sunshine to anyone who would listen. But let us be completely honest about the last few weeks. The weather has been absolutely kak.
The End of Consistency
If you have spent enough time in Jozi, you know exactly how the rhythm is supposed to work. We have always been used to highly consistent weather patterns. You knew you could set your watch by the 4 PM summer thunderstorms, and you knew exactly when to pull out your heavy blankets for the crisp, dry winter.
Now, that comforting consistency has completely vanished.
The skies have become wildly unpredictable, giving us four seasons in a single Tuesday. You leave the house at 7 AM shivering in a heavy winter coat, by midday you are sweating profusely in a t-shirt, and by the afternoon commute, you are navigating through a bizarre, unseasonal downpour. Planning a simple weekend braai has suddenly become an extreme sport.
To put this shift into perspective, just look at how our daily routines have been disrupted:
Time of Day The Old Expectation The Current Reality Morning Crisp, clear and predictable Freezing chills followed by sudden drizzle Midday Warm, breezy and comfortable Blistering, heavy heat Evening Mild and stable Gale-force winds and an unexpected freeze
Finding the Silver Lining
It is incredibly frustrating to watch the forecast change three times before breakfast. The sudden drops in temperature and the gloomy overcast days are enough to dampen anyone's mood. However, I guess you have to experience the genuinely bad weather to truly appreciate the good.
When you live in a city where nearly every single day is perfectly sunny, you start to take the climate completely for granted. You stop noticing how intensely blue the sky is or how perfect the evening breeze feels.
This recent run of dismal, up-and-down weather has served as a harsh reality check. Now, when the heavy clouds finally break and we are gifted one of those legendary, golden Johannesburg afternoons, we actually stop to savour it. We step outside, lift our faces to the sun, and remember exactly why we love living here.
The current inconsistency is undeniably annoying. But perhaps a few miserable, freezing weeks are exactly what we needed to remind us that a perfect Highveld day is something worth celebrating.
