The URC Penultimate Weekend: High Stakes, Late Twists and Who Can Go All The Way

As we head into Round 17 of the United Rugby Championship, the tension across the rugby world is palpable. With only two rounds left in the 2025/2026 regular season, this weekend is set to be an absolute blockbuster. For the everyday rugby fan, this is the time when the calculator comes out and every single bonus point matters. The battle for top eight playoff spots and crucial home advantage is going right down to the wire.

The Fixtures That Matter Most

The Bulls will be looking for a ruthless, maximum five points at Loftus Versfeld to push higher up the table.

The Late Twists Waiting to Happen

It is incredibly easy to look at the current standings and assume the top eight is essentially decided. But the late twists that could occur this weekend are severe, and some teams are looking very vulnerable.

The spiky reality is that Ulster is in serious danger of a total collapse. Sitting in eighth position with 47 points, they face the brutal task of hosting a Stormers side that knows how to win away from home. If the Stormers dismantle them in Belfast, the door is kicked wide open for Connacht, who are currently sitting in ninth. Should Connacht manage a desperate, passionate upset against Munster in their derby, they could leapfrog Ulster right at the death. The pressure on Ulster is monumental.

Furthermore, do not ignore the Leinster versus Lions fixture. Everyone expects Leinster to dominate at the RDS Arena, but the Lions have been a brilliant surprise package this season, sitting right alongside Leinster on the log. If the Lions pull off a shock victory in Ireland, it would throw the entire top four seeding into absolute chaos, potentially stripping Leinster of their usual comfortable home semi-final route.

Who Can Actually Go All The Way?

Having watched the physical toll this marathon season has taken across two hemispheres, predicting the ultimate champion requires looking beyond just the points difference.

  • DHL Stormers: They are top of the log for a very good reason. Their ability to win ugly on tour and then turn on the devastating attacking flair in Cape Town makes them formidable. If they secure the number one overall seeding, they are the clear favourites to take the trophy.

  • Leinster: Never, ever write off Leinster. Even when they look slightly vulnerable during the regular season, their squad depth and knockout rugby pedigree are unmatched. If they secure a home quarter-final, they remain incredibly dangerous.

  • Glasgow Warriors: Franco Smith has built a phenomenal machine in Scotland. They are highly disciplined, incredibly fit and very difficult to beat in front of their home fans.

  • Vodacom Bulls: They are the dangerous dark horses. They might be sitting slightly lower in the top eight right now, but their attacking stats are terrifying. If they manage to sneak into the top four for a home playoff, the altitude and sheer physical dominance at Loftus could propel them all the way to the final.

This URC weekend is no longer just about playing out the schedule. It is about survival, tactical strategy and the brutal reality of knockout rugby arriving early. Fasten your seatbelts, because the standings are about to be severely shaken up.
