BACK-TO-BACK BRILLIANCE FOR THE BLITZBOKS
The Blitzboks have done it! They’ve made history by becoming the first side to defend the HSBC SVNS Cape Town title, pulling off a dramatic 21-19 win over Argentina Sevens in a breath-taking final at DHL Stadium on Sunday.
After a shaky start to the 2025/26 series in Dubai, where they finished seventh, the Blitzboks arrived in Cape Town with something to prove. They wasted no time, powering through Pool A with wins over Fiji Sevens, New Zealand Sevens and Great Britain Sevens, capping the day with a 41-7 thrashing of the Brits.
Sunday began with a tense semi-final against France Sevens. The Blitzboks held their nerve to grind out a 22-17 win, setting up a heavyweight clash with Argentina.
In the final, Argentina looked to have it in the bag, leading 19-7 early in the second half thanks to a brace from Marcos Moneta. But the Blitzboks had other plans. A try from Sonwabo Sokoyi reignited hope, and with under a minute to go, Christie Grobbelaar crashed over under the posts.
Then came the nerve-shredding moment when fullback Ricardo Duarttee nailed the conversion from right beneath the sticks to swing the final score to 21-19.
Captain Impi Visser and coach Philip Snyman both lauded the grit and togetherness that got them over the line.
