BLACK PANTHER DIRECTOR MISTAKEN FOR BANK ROBBER, ARRESTED
Ryan Coogler was arrested after he tried to withdraw money from his own bank account.
The Black Panther director went to a Bank of America branch in Atlanta, Georgia. While wearing a Covid mask, sunglasses and a hat, he handed the teller a withdrawal slip with a note attached to it.
The note said that he wanted to withdraw $12 000 from his bank account and that he wanted it to be done discreetly. He also provided identification.
The teller misinterpreted the situation and told her boss that she suspects Coogler wants to rob the bank. She is pregnant and feared for her own as well as her unborn child’s safety.
TMZ reports that the 35-year-old director was only briefly arrested and that the situation should never have happened. He told the media outlet that Bank of America had since “worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on”.
The New York Times reported that Coogler told police he was paying for a medical assistant who worked for his family and sought discretion over safety concerns due to the cash amount he requested.
Coogler is currently working on the sequel to the Black Panther movie that was released in 2018.
