BROOS REFLECTS ON BAFANA’S ELIMINATION

South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) dream was ended frustratingly, and head coach Hugo Broos didn’t hide his disappointment after Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 loss to Cameroon knocked them out in the round of 16.

The Belgian boss said he felt his team were unlucky not to rally back and at least force a draw in Rabat, believing that the chances they created should’ve turned the game around.

Broos admitted that Bafana started the match well and had opportunities to score early, and if they’d taken just one of those openings, the outcome could’ve been completely different.

“Even we had the chances to score those two goals and to have a draw, but it was not our day today,” he said after the match.

Despite the elimination, Broos insisted he doesn’t think his side are going backwards. He pointed out that at the last AFCON, they were strong defensively, and though this year’s tournament saw them concede more goals, he still believes there’s progress to build on.

Broos also made it clear that emotions are high after a bitter defeat, but that he and his staff will be conducting a thorough evaluation of what went right and what didn’t as they turn their focus towards the upcoming World Cup in six months.
