The Japanese were sharp in attack and solid at the back, taking their chances when they came. Ecuador had periods of good play but could not break down a disciplined Japanese side. This result strengthens Japan’s position in what has been a competitive group.Uruguay made sure of their place in the last 16 with a straightforward 3-1 win against Cape Verde. The South Americans were clinical and controlled the game well. Cape Verde scored a late consolation but were outplayed for large parts of the match. Uruguay have shown real quality throughout the group stage.What does tomorrow bring?Monday 29 June sees the final round of group matches in some sections with several teams still fighting for qualification. Germany face Poland, France take on Belgium, Argentina play Mexico and England meet Croatia.
