Daytime highs struggle in the mid-teens at best, and that highveld wind makes it feel even colder than the numbers suggest. For many of us this is the reality of winter on the reef.Yet there is one saving grace that makes Johannesburg winters bearable. The sun still shines. Even on the coldest days, the sky often clears to a bright blue, and when that winter sun hits your back it brings genuine warmth. You can step outside in the middle of the day, find a sheltered spot, and actually feel comfortable for a few hours. It is not the grey, damp misery you get in some other parts of the world. You wake up shivering, scrape frost off the car, and wonder how anyone functions in this. It is a different kind of winter, one that rewards those who dress in layers and know when to seek the sunshine.For those who find the cold too much, escaping to the north coast is always a tempting option. A quick flight up to Durban or further into KwaZulu-Natal brings you to milder temperatures, warmer seas, and that lovely subtropical feel. Many Johannesburg families make the trip during the school holidays just to thaw out for a week or two. The contrast is striking. One day you are bundling up against the frost, the next you are walking on the beach in lighter clothes.Still, there is something special about embracing a proper Johannesburg winter. The cold encourages early nights, hearty meals, and time spent indoors with family. It makes you appreciate the simple pleasure of a warm bed and a hot drink. And when the sun does break through, it feels like a daily gift.Bundle up properly, keep an eye on the elderly and vulnerable, and remember to step into the sunlight whenever you can. Yes, it is ice cold right now, but at least in Joburg we get the sun to take the edge off. Winter will pass soon enough, and before we know it the warmth will return.
