VBOKS VS BARBARIANS 26!
Springboks prove too strong for Barbarians in high-scoring Gqeberha thrillerThe Springboks kicked off their 2026 international season in emphatic style on Saturday, running out 80-31 winners against a game Barbarians side at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. It was a match full of tries, attacking flair and some standout individual performances that will give coach Rassie Erasmus plenty of positives to take forward. From the outset the Boks showed their intent, with slick handling and powerful running putting the invitational side under early pressure. Yet the Barbarians refused to lie down and made a real contest of the first half, scoring several tries of their own through some adventurous play. At times the defence from both teams went missing, leading to an entertaining, if loose, spectacle that produced 17 tries in total. What stood out most was the quality of several Springbok displays. Edwill van der Merwe was simply electric on the wing, helping himself to a hat-trick and looking every bit the world-class finisher. His pace and finishing ability lit up the stadium and will have supporters dreaming of more big moments in the Tests ahead. In the forwards, captain Siya Kolisi led from the front with his usual relentless work rate, while Jasper Wiese and Franco Mostert brought plenty of punch around the breakdown. The bench also made a strong impression. Several younger players and those on the fringes of the squad got valuable game time and showed they belong at this level. There were moments of real promise from the next generation, with clever offloads, strong carries and good decision-making in broken play. Erasmus will be encouraged by what he saw, even if some areas still need tightening up.The Barbarians, as always, brought spirit and entertainment. They ran from deep, threw the ball around and scored five tries that delighted the neutral fans in the crowd. Their approach made for a festival atmosphere, but in the end the superior fitness, power and clinical edge of the Springboks told. This result sends a clear message that the world champions remain a formidable force. The Boks were simply too strong overall, but the scoreline also highlights the need for better defensive organisation as they prepare for tougher challenges.Looking ahead, the Springboks will want to build on this encouraging start. The mix of experienced leaders and fresh talent worked well in patches, and there is genuine excitement about seeing more of the young guns come through in the coming weeks. Another big performance or two like this and the squad will head into the serious Test matches in fine fettle. It was a strong opening win and a reminder of just how much depth and attacking talent South African rugby possesses right now. Bring on the next fixture
