LIVERPOOL SNATCH WIN AMID RED CARDS AND INJURY BLOW
Liverpool survived a wildly dramatic afternoon at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, edging Spurs 2–1 in a Premier League thriller that had it all: Red cards, injury scares and a late scare for the visitors.
The game exploded into life just past the half-hour mark when Xavi Simons was shown a straight red card after a VAR check flagged a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk, reducing Tottenham to ten men.
Spurs were already fighting to break down a stubborn Liverpool defence, and suddenly their job got a whole lot harder.
Liverpool capitalised after the break. Alexander Isak, introduced at half-time, broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, nodding home from a slick move that began with Florian Wirtz’s first Premier League assist of the season.
But the joy was short-lived. Isak scored when caught under a challenge from Micky van de Ven.
Ten minutes later, Hugo Ekitike powered in a header to double Liverpool’s advantage, sending Reds fans into raptures. Spurs, however, refused to roll over with Richarlison pulling one back late.
In stoppage time, Cristian Romero was dismissed for a second yellow card, leaving Tottenham with just nine players on the pitch, a bizarre twist in an already chaotic match.
Liverpool held on, climbing into the top region of the table with the victory, but the mood was tempered by Isak’s injury concern, depriving them of an immediate match-winner.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank was also furious with the officiating, labelling some decisions harsh and insisting his side battled courageously despite the setbacks.
