VOLCANO ERUPTS IN BALI
Local tourist authorities on the South Asia island of Bali have warned travellers to the island that they should anticipate travel cancellations, re-routing, or delays in the coming weeks.
This is because the volcano Mount Lewotoi Lake Laki is in the process of erupting.
Although health officials have confirmed that there is no public health risk in Bali Province, the advice given is that travelling to the area must be conducted on a needs-must basis only.
A site dedicated to the volcano, Volcano Discovery, is run by the community and has been created to monitor the site. It explained that lava flow continued to expel from Mounth Lewotobi Laki Laki since 14 November.
The post explains: “The elevated effusive-explosive eruption of the volcano goes on. Multiple lava flows continue to occupy nearly entire slopes of the edifice in all directions. From the latest optical Sentinel-2 acquisition, the most intense lava flow activity appears to be on the western-northwestern flank as a strong thermal anomaly is being detected.”
The BBC reports that the volcano spewed a 9-kilometre ash column into the sky over the weekend, one week after a major eruption killed 10 people.
The island’s local tourism authority, Wonderful Indonesia has warned that people should “stay indoors during ash fall and seek designated safe zones”.
It’s also advised to avoid river valleys and low-lying areas.
