ANC WANTS SALARY INCREASE FOR RAMAPHOSA
The African National Congress (ANC) wants to table a motion in the National Assembly (NA) to start a debate around President Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary.
The motion, to increase the President’s salary, will be heard in the NA next week.
According to the ruling party, Ramaphosa hasn’t had a salary increase since he was first appointed president in 2018. This includes his renewed appointment as president after the May 29 elections as well
ANC Deputy Chief Whip Doris Dlakude has confirmed that the motion will be tabled.
“It is part of the programme.”
When Ramaphosa took office in 2018, he pledged that he would contribute half his Presidential salary to a fund to be managed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The money was to go towards several small social projects scattered across the country.
The 2023/24 budget also indicated that the President’s salary will remain unchanged at R4.2 million annually.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s salary is currently at R1.5 million annually.
According to the Citizen, Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen’s salary, as leader of the main opposition, is R1.79 million per year.
Another salary increase to be motioned is a 2.5% salary increase for judges. It’s also expected to be approved on Tuesday.
