BARCA BLOW AWAY ELCHE TO STAY TOP OF LA LIGA
Barcelona boosted their La Liga title charge with a commanding 3–1 win over Elche on Saturday, keeping them firmly atop the table and four points clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid.
The visitors took control early and never looked back, though they’ll know they should’ve scored more given the sheer number of chances they created.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal set the tone inside six minutes at the Martínez Valero Stadium, finishing coolly after a brilliant pass from Dani Olmo. The 18-year-old has been in sensational form this season, and his early goal put Barcelona in the driving seat.
Despite Barcelona’s dominance, Elche battled back, with Alvaro Rodriguez levelling on the half-hour mark with a sharp finish that punished a high Barca line.
Barcelona responded before halftime when Ferran Torres restored their lead, rifling home at the back post after intelligent work from Frenkie de Jong. The Catalans continued to pepper the Elche goal in the second half, hitting the woodwork and missing a host of gilt-edged chances.
Substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the victory in the 71st minute, tapping in from close range after Yamal’s dangerous low cross skidded through the hosts’ defence. That finish not only secured the three points but also marked a fine contribution from the England international during his loan spell.
The result means Barcelona sit on 55 points from 22 games, four clear of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand. Elche remain mid-table with 24 points.
