DA IMPEACHMENT PUSH?
The Kingmaker's Dilemma: Will the DA Push to Impeach the President?
The Kingmaker's Dilemma: Will the DA Push to Impeach the President?
When the results of the 2024 elections forced the creation of the Government of National Unity, the political landscape of South Africa fundamentally shifted.
However, fast forward to May 2026, and the political honeymoon is officially over. The Constitutional Court has firmly revived the Phala Phala saga, clearing the way for a parliamentary impeachment committee to investigate President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Heavy Burden of the Crown
There is a spiky truth to coalition politics that voters are now witnessing firsthand. Being the kingmaker does have consequences. It is an absolute double-edged sword.
For decades, the DA built its entire brand on being the fierce opposition. They campaigned relentlessly on a platform of strict accountability, the rule of law, and zero tolerance for corruption. Now, they are standing on the inside of the government tent. If the impeachment committee finds that the President has a case to answer regarding the foreign currency hidden in his farmhouse furniture, the DA will be forced to make an impossible choice.
If they vote to protect the President in the name of national stability, they risk completely alienating their core voting base who sent them to Parliament to clean up the government. If they vote to impeach him, they risk collapsing the entire Government of National Unity, potentially plunging South Africa into severe political and economic chaos. Watching this delicate balancing act unfold, I hope they know what they are doing!
Stacking the Committee
The DA is certainly not treating this as a minor procedural hiccup. While the President seeks to take the independent panel report on judicial review, the DA has made it clear that accountability cannot be endlessly delayed.
They have already submitted their top legal and political heavyweights to sit on the 31-member impeachment committee, including seasoned prosecutors like Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach.
A High Stakes Game of Chess
The upcoming months will test the absolute limits of the coalition agreement.
The Numbers Game: Impeaching a sitting president requires a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.
Even with a united opposition, the numbers heavily depend on how the DA chooses to cast its votes. The Economic Factor: Markets crave stability. The DA knows that a messy presidential exit could trigger an investor panic, damaging the portfolios they are currently trying to fix.
The Public Trust: Everyday citizens are exhausted by political theatre. They want leaders who govern ethically. If the DA sacrifices its principles to keep the coalition alive, voters might severely punish them at the next polls.
The reality is that holding the balance of power is far more complicated than simply sitting in the opposition benches and pointing out government failures. The Democratic Alliance wanted a seat at the main table to help steer the country out of disaster. Now they have it, and they are holding the match that could either illuminate the truth or burn the entire house down. The nation is watching closely to see exactly how the kingmaker plays its next move.
