FLASH FLOODS IN INDIA, FOUR DEAD
At least four people have been killed and dozens are missing after flash floods hit a village in India located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains.
A sudden and intense rainfall led to massive amounts of water sweeping through the town of Dharali in the state of Uttarakhand on Tuesday.
Numerous houses, hotels and shops were washed away when the flood hit the village.
By Tuesday night, the chief minister of Uttarakhand state, Pushkar Singh Dhami, said that around 130 people were rescued.
On Wednesday, four bodies were recovered while dozens were still reported missing.
Sky News reports that Dilip Singh, a disaster management official, said the "search for others is still underway" but added that adverse conditions, damaged roads and rough terrain were hampering rescue efforts.
Army helicopters and search and rescue teams are still actively searching through the rubble and on standby to provide supplies to those stranded.
Lieutenant Colonel Manish Srivastava from the country’s defence force said 11 Indian army soldiers have been reported missing. He added that the "conditions are extremely challenging, but our teams are staying put".
