MASSIVE COLD FRONT TO HIT SA
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that South Africa should brace itself for snowfall, disruptive coastal swells and damaging winds this week.
Several Yellow Level 1 warnings have been issued for the above, as well as interior winds.
The first cold front was set to hit the Western Cape on Monday morning with gale-force winds and sea swells up to 5.5 metres. This was followed by the second cold front that hit the same province later that evening.
The SAWS warned that “coastal users and anglers on low-lying rocks are at risk of being caught off guard by high-energy waves and swept off to sea”.
On Tuesday, both cold fronts will be moving across the country to the Northern Cape and Central Karoo.
The SAWS has warned of strong interior winds, dust storms and crosswinds that are likely to create hazardous driving conditions.
“Strong gusty winds are expected over the central parts of the Northern Cape,” the SAWS warned.
“Impacts include localised damage to informal settlements, reduced visibility due to dust, and the risk of localised runaway fires.”
The cold will continue to move eastward and reach the other provinces by Wednesday and Thursday, bringing extremely cold conditions to the Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
