FRENCH PRESIDENT SUES CANDACE OWENS
A 22-count defamation lawsuit has been filed by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.
The lawsuit filed in the United States is against Candace Owens, the right-wing podcaster who claims Brigitte could be a man.
According to a statement by Tom Clare, the Macrons’ lawyer, the lawsuit alleges that Owens has broadcast “a relentless year-long campaign of defamation against the Macrons”.
It all started when Owens launched a series of podcasts in March about the conspiracy theory. She launched the video on YouTube titled “Is France’s First Lady a Man?”.
That YouTube video was only the first of several videos about Brigitte and Owens, 4.5 million YouTube subscribers have been loving it. A series, “Becoming Brigitte,” followed.
Clare also says the lawsuit contains claims that Owens also sold merchandise promoting her claim.
CNN reports that the complaint alleges Owens was the first person to bring these baseless claims to the US media and an international audience. The couple are suing for punitive damages and alleges that they have suffered “substantial economic damages”, including loss of future business opportunities.
In retaliation, Owens posted a screenshot of the article on CNN with the caption: “I will be coming for this wig today. Stay tuned.”
