WIESE BANNED FOR FOUR MATCHES

World Rugby has handed Springbok number eight Jasper Wiese a four-match ban.

This comes after the 29-year-old received a red card for headbutting an Italian player during the test match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 20th minute of the match.

The four matches Wiese will miss are the match against Georgia in Nelspruit on Saturday, the two matches against Australia in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively, as well as the match against New Zealand in Auckland in September.

This means Wiese will only be up for selection against for the last three Rugby Championship matches in September and October.

In the disciplinary update released by World Rugby, it stated that Wiese “accepted that foul play had occurred but did not accept that the offence warranted a red card”.

The update also said:

“The independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) met on Sunday, 13 July and was chaired by Roddy Dunlop, joined by former players Jamie Corsi (Wales) and Olly Kohn (Wales). In accordance with the remit of the new expedited off-field sanction process trial operational in the Summer (July) Internationals, sanctions are proposed in line with Appendix 1 of Regulation 17.”
