GET YOUR NEW ID DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR
If everything goes to plan, you’ll soon be able to have your new ID delivered to your home without ever visiting a branch of the Department of Home Affairs.
During his address in parliament earlier this week, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the system will be called Home Affairs @home.
This revolutionary system will allow the public to access services from anywhere in the world, even if they live outside of South Africa.
“Our goal is nothing less than revolutionising the way citizens interact with their government by moving from manual to digital. But this is about more than technology,” Schreiber said in his budget vote speech.
The department is known for embracing digital opportunities over the last few years. Through digitised systems, a decade-long visa backlog of 306,000 ID applications was cleared.
The Border Management Authority improved the rate of detection of illegal border crossings by 125% thanks to drones and body cameras.
Another digital innovation is the deployment of digital self-service kiosks that will soon allow the public to print birth, death and marriage certificates at the kiosks without having to queue at the counters.
