MAJOR UPGRADES FOR LANSERIA

South Africa’s only privately owned and operated airport, Lanseria International Airport, is getting ready for some major upgrades.

The upgrades will give the airport the chance to compete with other airports like OR Tambo International Airport.

Currently, Lanseria handles around 1.9 million passengers annually. This number is expected to grow to more than 4 million by 2032 and 6 million by 2037.

To accommodate this growth, the airport is embarking on an infrastructure development programme, like relocating the fuel farm and building a new parkade.

Long-term parking has been an issue for several years, which has led to the decision to build a three-storey parkade opposite the main terminal, which will add 1,000 new parking bays. This R250 million investment will bring the total number of parking bays to 4,000.

But these developments won’t happen overnight. The project is estimated to take 10 years, and ground will be broken during the third quarter of 2025.

According to Lanseria International Airport’s CEO Rampa Rammopo, the project is part of a much bigger picture.

“We hope this project will stimulate business activity, improve logistics and market access, and ultimately drive regional economic growth.”
