PLATO COFFEE LAUNCHES TRAINING ACADEMY

The South African coffee brand Plato Coffee is launching its own training academy in Cape Town.

The new facility will open in September on Canterbury Street in District Six.

Plato Coffee was founded by brothers Stephan and Petrus Bredell in 2019. They opened their first shop in a container in Centurion and began trading under an informal licence.

Petrus ran the day-to-day operations while Stephan was still working at a corporate company. Soon after, Stephan quit and joined Petrus full-time.

Stephan said, “Plato Academy is a space built for coffee excellence and connection”.

It will offer coffee workshops, barista courses, and practical training for people at different skill levels.

“From foundational barista training to latte art workshops and sensory experiences, each session is crafted to elevate your understanding and appreciation of coffee.”

Bredell emphasised that the training academy will be a hub for more than just those wanting to learn the art of coffee brewing.

“This is more than a school, it’s a community hub for individuals who value quality, curiosity, and craftsmanship,” Bredell said.

According to Plato’s website, they currently operate across 85 locations and are on track to expand to 150 by the end of 2025. They aim to reach 250 locations by the end of 2026 and 500 by 2027.
