E-HAILING DRIVERS PROTEST IN JHB

Parts of Kramerville in Johannesburg came to a standstill on Tuesday due to a protest by e-hailing drivers.

Drivers from Uber and Bolt came together near the Uber Greenlight Hub and marched to Uber’s South African headquarters in Parktown.

According to reports, the drivers protested against ongoing issues like Uber’s unprofitable fares and commission percentages.

The commission percentages have been a long-standing issue with drivers demonstrating outside Parliament as far back as November 2021 already. Back then, the drivers demanded that e-hailing services should decrease the commission they take and increase their fares.

MyBroadBand reports that this latest strike comes after the E-hailing Partners Council (EPC) warned of a shutdown of Gauteng e-hailing services in January to protest the impounding of their vehicles and lack of proper licensing channels.

According to the EPC, there are approximately 21,000 operating licence applications currently under consideration by the Gauteng Department of Roads.

“The department has only issued nearly 9,000. This shows that e-hailing operators are keen to comply,” it said.
