TWO NEW SOUTH AFRICAN VISAS

To increase South Africa’s appeal as a filming location and events hub, the Department of Home Affairs has announced the launch of two new visas.

The Screen Talent and Global Entertainment Scheme (STAGES) visa is specifically aimed at simplifying visa access for film production companies, while the Meetings, Events, Exhibitions and Tourism Scheme (MEETS) visa will ensure that visa applications for international attendees at events like conferences, sporting events, global events and exhibitions will be processed with quick turnaround times.

Those applying for these visas will also not be required to visit a South African embassy or consulate, as all applications can be done online.

Leon Schreiber, Minister of the Department of Home Affairs, said South Africa’s outdated and paper-based systems hinder the country’s chances of welcoming more work-related visitors.

One example he mentioned during his budget speech in parliament is the loss of a big Netflix production from Mexico. It ended up costing South Africa R400 million in lost income. The hope is that the STAGES visa will be the answer to this problem.

Schreiber noted that the MEETS visa will support events like the SA20 cricket tournament and the World Rugby Sevens. The new visa will allow athletes to arrive without delay.
