GAS EXPLOSION IN MAGOEBASKLOOF

The R71 in Magoebaskloof was closed earlier today due to a gas explosion.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo has urged travellers to avoid the area.

The explosion happened on the R71 just above Ruskamp when a truck carrying gas cylinders crashed and caught fire. The truck was travelling from Tzaneen to Polokwane.

SA Trucker reports that the truck smashed through a barrier and plunged down the embankment before erupting in flames. Brake failure has been blamed.

The fire resulted in the gas cylinders exploding, which ignited a nearby plantation.

A spokesperson for the department, Matome Taueastsoala, said the driver sustained minor injuries and was being treated at a hospital in Tzaneen.

Motorists were advised to make use of George’s Valley Road or use other alternative routes. Emergency services were on the scene while traffic authorities directed traffic in the area.

"The Department of Transport and Community Safety appreciates the efforts of the emergency services and road maintenance teams who worked tirelessly to clear the area and restore traffic flow."
