FLYSAFAIR PILOTS PLAN STRIKE FROM MONDAY

A union representing FlySafair pilots has warned that they’ve secured a strike certificate if their demands aren’t met.

The pilots of the low-cost South African airline are demanding a higher pay increase and have raised concerns over a new rostering system. According to them, the new system cuts into their leave and rest time.

Most of the pilots are represented by the union Solidarity.

FlySafair has warned the pilots that should they join the strike, it would come at a cost. Pilots who refuse to work won’t get paid for the days they miss.

The airline has also said that it doesn’t expect all unionised crew to participate in the strike.

FlySafair addressed the issue around the new rostering system, saying it's flexible and gives it “a certain degree of grace” to keep planes in the air by making use of non-unionised or willing staff. The airline operates seven days a week.

Reassuring passengers that all flights will still go ahead, it said in a statement:

“It’s all been carefully considered, and we are obviously approaching it as responsibly as we possibly can, and we are very confident that we will be able to fulfil the requirements of the schedule.”
