THREE KILLED IN GERMAN TRAIN CRASH

At least three people have died after a train crash in Germany.

The train derailed in the southwestern part of the country near the town of Riedlingen, according to a statement released by Ulm police.

"According to current investigations, three people were killed and other passengers were seriously injured."

At the time of the crash, the train was carrying around 100 passengers. Two of the carriages derailed at around 18:10 while the train was travelling through a hilly and wooded area between two towns.

Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes, including the fire brigade, rescue crews and local police.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took to X to give details on the rescue efforts.

"I am in close contact with the interior minister and the transport minister and have asked them to support the rescue forces by all means".

Initially, local police were unable to confirm what had caused the derailment. Since investigations took place, local authorities have been able to establish that the cause of the derailment was an overflowing sewage shaft that caused a landslide.
