GOVERNMENT REWARDS NATIONAL TEAMS WITH MILLIONS IN BONUSES
South Africa’s top football teams are getting a major financial boost as the government steps up to recognise their recent achievements on the international stage.
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie announced that Bafana Bafana will receive a hefty R5 million bonus, while Banyana Banyana, the under-20 men’s team Amajita, and the under-17 squad Amajimbos will each earn well-deserved rewards: R1 million for the senior women and under-20 sides, and R500,000 for the under-17s.
The announcement reflects a growing commitment to invest in national teams and encourage excellence across all levels of South African sport. McKenzie said the bonuses are not just rewards but also motivation for players to continue pushing for success in future tournaments, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.
He also urged private companies and sponsors to play a greater role in supporting local sport, saying that lasting success depends on collaboration between government, business, and the sporting community.
In addition, the department revealed that a dedicated team will oversee the rollout of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system to ensure South Africa aligns with global standards. With these investments, the country hopes to turn promise into podium finishes.
