LIVERPOOL DELIVER WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
Liverpool pulled off a gritty win at the San Siro, edging out Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to a dramatic late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai. It was a result that didn’t just deliver three points, it also answered critics and steadied nerves after a turbulent week off the pitch.
The match was far from pretty, but it didn’t have to be. The breakthrough came in the 88th minute when a hesitant tug on the shirt of substitute Florian Wirtz by Alessandro Bastoni was spotted after a VAR review, awarding a spot-kick that Szoboszlai calmly dispatched.
Earlier on, there’d been a moment of hope for Liverpool when Ibrahima Konaté nodded in what looked like a perfect opener, only for it to be chalked off after VAR ruled handball.
With this win, Liverpool leapfrogged into the top eight of their group with 12 points from six games, keeping alive hopes of direct qualification to the knockout stage.
What makes it even more significant is that the Reds did it without star winger Mohamed Salah, who was left out of the travelling squad amid a public falling out with boss Arne Slot.
