NETBALL SOUTH AFRICA IN BIG TROUBLE
Last week wasn’t a good week for Netball South Africa (NSA). Not only did World Netball suspend NSA’s president, Cecilia Molokwane, for 14 days, but the managing committee also had to face Parliament.
Joseph McGluwa, the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture and his fellow committee members grilled the NSA board.
The committee was left shocked and enraged as it was faced with the NSA members being ill-prepared for the session and not being able to provide credible answers.
In 2023, South Africa hosted the Netball World Cup in Cape Town. A special Netball World Cup Board was established to organise the event alongside the NSA.
After two years had passed since the event took place, the Board and NSA were unable to supply audited financial statements to account for the R90 million allocated to host the event.
McGluwa commented, “There are no audited financial statements… We need answers as to what has transpired and how the money has been utilised… Why did it take so long to complete a report from 2023”?
The committee requested that NSA and the Board return to parliament in 14 days. The committee members asked for clarity regarding the use of the staggering amount.
