POPE’S RING TO BE DESTROYED

Although controversial, Pope Francis’ famous ring is set to be destroyed because tradition dictates it.

The late head of the Catholic Church passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.

Since the first pope, St. Peter, wore it during the 13th century, it’s been a tradition of all the pontiffs to wear what is known as the Fisherman’s Ring.

Every pope receives its own unique seal that is etched onto the ring and a pendant called the bulla. These were traditionally used as official seals for official documents and letters. To avoid forgery after a pope died, both would be smashed with a hammer to ensure they’re destroyed.

The physical act of destroying the ring and the bulla is part of tradition as well. Only the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, a senior cardinal appointed to oversee the tradition, can destroy the items.

They would be destroyed by smashing them with a hammer in the presence of the College of Cardinals.

Francis wore his Fisherman’s Ring to official ceremonies, but during daily duties, he opted for a simple silver ring.

Followers of the Catholic Church are known to kiss the Pope’s ring as a form of blessing, although Francis made headlines when he was filmed trying to avoid people from kissing the Fisherman’s Ring.
