TEENAGER DIES AFTER DOING ONE CHIP CHALLENGE
An American teenager died shortly after taking part in a viral challenge involving an extremely spicy tortilla chip.
The One Chip Challenge requires competitors to eat what’s believed to be the hottest chip in the world and then wait as long as possible before they eat or drink anything to relieve the burn.
Harris Wolobah is a 14-year-old from Massachusetts who’s parents believe he died because of the challenge.
According to their GoFundMe page, Wolobah’s loved ones believe the complications from eating an extremely spicy chip was the reason he died.
Harris participated in the challenge after he was given the chip by another student. Soon after, he experienced stomach pain and wen to the school nurse. The nurse called his mother to pick him up. At home, he lost consciousness where his brother found him.
He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.
Now, Amazon and eBay have announced that they’ve pulled the One Chip Challenge from sale.
The chips are individually wrapped and made from two of the spiciest chilli peppers in the world, the Carolina Reaper and the Scorpion.
The manufacturer of the chip, Paqui have made a statement on their website regarding the removal of the product from shelves:
“While the product continues to adhere to food safety standards, out of abundance of caution, we are actively working with our retailers to remove the product from shelves.”
