7-YEAR-OLD DISCOVERS DIAMONS
A lucky girl discovered a 2.95-carat diamond at a state park in Arkansas, United States.
Aspen Brown went to the Crater of Diamonds State Park with her dad and grandmother to celebrate her birthday.
It was supposed to be a happy day, but little did they know it was going to be “the second-largest registered diamond discovery by a park guest this year”, according to a statement released by the park.
CNN reports that the 37-acre field where visitors can search for treasures is the eroded surface of a volcanic crater. In addition to diamonds, other precious gems like amethysts and garnets also occur there as a result of the site’s unique geology.
The report says that Brown picked up a gem about the size of a green pea from a pathway along the northeast side of the search area.
The golden-brown diamond has a sparkling luster. The complete crystal has no broken facets and a small crevice on one side.
Waymon Cox, assistant park superintendent, said “it’s certainly one of the most beautiful diamonds I’ve seen in recent years”.
