80-YEAR-OLD ENTERS MISS UNIVERSE KOREA

Choi Soon-hwa is a fashion model, but that’s not why she’s making headlines around the world. She’ll be participating in the Miss Universe Korea contest and she just happens to be 80 years old.

Soon-Hwa has silver hair, crow’s feet, several other wrinkles and fine lines, as well as sagging skin, yet this hasn’t stopped her from entering and qualifying.

The other contestants vying for the same title are young enough to be her grandchildren.

If she goes through, she’ll be the oldest contestant in the history of the international pageant.

During an interview with CNN, Soon-hwa said she hopes she gets the chance to shock everyone.

“I want to stun the world, like ‘How is an 80-year-old lady so healthy?’”

But, entering the local pageant didn’t come without its obstacles. The age of contestants that were allowed to enter used to be 18 to 28. Soon-hwa requested the organisers to change the age gap so that she could enter as well.

Now, contestants from 18 to any age can enter.

The pageant takes place tonight and if she wins, she’ll represent South Korea at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City on 16 November.
