MOHAMED AL-FAYED ACCUSED OF RAPE BY MULTIPLE WOMEN
The former owner of London’s famous Harrods store has been accused by more than 20 women of rape and sexual assault.
Mohamed Al-Fayed died last year at the age of 94. He was a well-known public figure and regular sponsor of royal horse shows which he frequently attended alongside Queen Elizabeth II.
His son, Dodi Al-Fayed died along with Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
The allegations came to light in a documentary and podcast made by the BBC. The alleged assaults and physical violence took place over several years and at different properties in Paris and London.
This isn’t the first time that the Egyptian billionaire has been accused of such allegations. News24 reports that in July 2023, Harrods began settling claims with women who came forward with claims of sexual abuse by Fayed from the late 1980s to the late 2000s.
Al-Fayed sold Harrods in 2010 to an investment firm related to Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund. The selling price was reported to be almost R35 billion.
The new owners said they were “utterly appalled” by the allegations and said that “as a business, we failed our employees who were his victims and for this, we sincerely apologise”.
