PRAVIN GORDHAN DIES

The former finance minister Pravin Gordhan has died.

His family announced his death via a statement, saying he “passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family, closest friends and his lifelong comrades in the liberation struggle”.

Before his death, Gordhan was finance minister twice and faced the wrath of the state capture led by former president Jacob Zuma and the Gupta family.

The 75-year-old is known for being the founding commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

News24 reports that Gordhan was admitted to the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg on Tuesday after a recent cancer diagnosis. The former freedom fighter and trained pharmacist retired from politics after the national and provincial elections in May, following a lifetime in politics.

His family said, his final message was that he had “no regrets… We have made our contribution”.

Gordhan retired from his position as finance minister in March of this year, just a month shy of his 75th birthday.
