LONDON’S OXFORD STREET TO BECOME PEDESTRIAN ONLY STREET
For years, people have been debating whether London’s famous Oxford Street should become a pedestrian-only street. Now, the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, has made the decision.
In a statement released by the mayor’s office, the plans were outlined and included “turning the road into a traffic-free pedestrianized avenue, creating a beautiful public space”.
According to the statement, the popular street receives more than 500,000 visitors every day and is home to flagship stores such as Selfridges and John Lewis.
Khan’s office is worried that the street could lose its quintessential English charm that it used to have. “Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain’s retail sector, but there’s no doubt that it has suffered hugely over the last decade. Urgent action is needed to give the nation’s most famous high street a new lease of life.”
This isn’t the first time that Khan has tried to regenerate the area. During a previous attempt, his plans were blocked by Westminster City Council, the body in charge of managing the local area.
