MAN TRIES TO EVADE PAYING FOR NY TRAIN, BYSTANDER SHOT IN HEAD

A man, Gregory Delpeche is in hospital in critical condition after he was shot in the face by police. He was an innocent bystander.

Delpeche happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when another man tried to evade paying his fare at a busy subway station in New York.

The incident took place outside the Sutter Avenue L Station in Brooklyn.

Two police officers shot at the fare evader after he refused to comply with orders, muttered threats and drew a knife.

Delpeche’s relatives told local media that the wound to his head left him with possible brain damage. He is currently still sedated and breathing through a tube. He had to undergo surgery to reduce brain swelling.

Another bystander as well as another officer and the suspect were also injured.

Several critics and members of the public have criticised police for the shooting incident over a suspect not paying his train fare. But, Tom Donlon, New York’s interim police commissioner said: “Make no mistake, the events that occurred… were the results of an armed perpetrator”.
