ANONYMOUS CHARITY BIDDER PAYS $19 MILLION TO LUNCH WITH WARREN BUFFET
At an annual auction to benefit the United States homeless charity Glide, a lunch with tech entrepreneur Warren Buffet reached a record high amount of $19,000,100.
The annual charity auction was hosted by eBay and bidders were vetted by the organisers to ensure they were able to pay the money they promised they would at the auction.
This year’s winner outbid 43 other bidders to win the lunch.
It broke the record for the world’s most expensive charity meal which was set in 2019 by crypto investor Justin Sun when he won the bid to eat lunch with Buffet for $4.5 million.
Buffet, who turns 92 in August has hosted the steak lunch named the Power Lunch, since 2018 at Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse.
This would be the billionaire’s final Power Lunch since he started the charity initiative with the restaurant owner. According to the owner, Andrew Stillman, Buffet always orders a steak with a Diet Coke when he attends the famous lunch with the winning bidder and seven of the bidder’s guests.
Buffet is well known for his philanthropic gestures. He has pledged to give 99% of his wealth to philanthropy during his life or after he dies.
Business Insider reports that Buffet said the lunches have been “nothing but good. I’ve met a lot of interesting people from all over the world. The one universal characteristic is that they feel the money is going to be put to very good uses.”
