ARGENTINA THREATENS TO WITHDRAW FROM WHO
First, the United States did it and now Argentina has warned it’ll do it as well.
Argentinian President Javier Milei has instructed his Foreign Minister, Feraro Werthein, to withdraw his country’s participation in the World Health Organisation. This was announced by Manuel Adorni, the presidential spokesperson at a news conference on Wednesday.
Adorni said, “We Argentinians will not allow an international organisation to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health”.
He added that Argentina’s decision was based on “profound differences regarding… health management, especially during the pandemic that… led us to the longest lockdown in human history and a lack of independence in the face of the political influence of some states”.
In a statement, Argentina’s presidential office said WHO caused economic damage during the COVID-19 pandemic by “(promoting) endless quarantines”.
Argentina is following in the footsteps of the United States. On President Donald Trump’s first day back in the Oval Office he announced that he is withdrawing the United States from the WHO.
At the time, WHO’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he “regrets” Trump’s decision to withdraw, highlighting the fact that the United States also gains from the agency.
