GOOGLE TO CHANGE GULF OF MEXICO’S NAME

Google has said that it will comply with US President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Wikipedia states that the Gulf of Mexico is an ocean basin and a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, mostly surrounded by the North American continent.

The executive order signed by the President calls for all federal government maps and official documents to “reflect its renaming”.

In short, all maps, both printed and digital, will have to execute the name change.

Google took to X to explain that the company has a “longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources”.

As with all location names on Google Maps, only users in the US will see the change. Google Maps users will always see the location’s official local name while users in other countries will always see both names.

Google will apply that same strategy here.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reacted to President Trump’s decision, saying “he says that he will call it the Gulf of America on its continental shelf, for us it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico”.
