IRELAND APPOINTS NEW PRIME MINISTER

For the second time in his political career, Michael Martin has been appointed as Ireland’s prime minister.

Martin is the 64-year-old leader of the Fianna Fail party.

The country’s general election was held in November already, but the parties involved in the coalition haven’t been able to find a goal.

On Wednesday, parliament’s first day back in session for this year, the voting process was delayed more than once. Eventually, it was abandoned for the day because the parties involved were unable to come to an agreement and protests followed.

After several delays on Thursday morning again, government acknowledged that there was “ambiguity” in speaking rights.

An agreement was eventually reached and it was established that government-supporting independents can’t retain extended speaking rights from the opposition benches.

Once eventually elected, Martin said it was a “profound honour to be nominated to serve as head of the government in a free, democratic and diverse republic”.

CNN reports that the country’s centre-right Fianna Fail party won the most seats during the election but didn’t secure enough for a parliamentary majority.
