WOOLIES AND CHECKERS TO OPEN DARK STORES
Going to buy groceries might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Now add workers running around trying to buy on behalf of online shoppers and it can get a bit too much.
Luckily, the people at both the grocers have also noticed it and are doing something about it: They’re opening dark stores.
Dark stores aren’t open to the public and are solely there to fulfil the needs of the online orders placed through Dash and Sixty60.
Woolworths already has two dark stores in Gardens and Maitland in Cape Town, and now they’re planning to open more.
Woolies Dash has seen its sales grow by 71% over the last year, leading to the premium retailer increasing its number of dark stores.
Liz Hillock, Woolworths's director of online and mobile, said dark stores will make it easier for everyone now and in the future.
“Investing in dark stores is a testament to our focus on creating a future-fit omnichannel.”
Checkers opted to establish their first dark stores in Gauteng with stores in Johannesburg North, Pretoria, and Centurion.
